The last steam-hauled passenger train to run in Britain

dates back to exactly 50 years to August 1968.

It was called the Fifteen Guinea Special,

a special tour running from Liverpool Lime Street

to Manchester Victoria, Carlisle and back to Liverpool.

Tickets cost the princely sum of 15 guineas

– worth around £250 today –

but it was an historic journey.

The following day, British Rail banned steam.

in 2016, Flying Scotsman

has been hauling

special passenger tours across the UK

and making appearances

at the National Railway Museum in York

and Locomotion in Shildon.
