Few modern authors
have placed language so centrally
within their imaginative work
as J.R.R. Tolkien.
As a professional philologist, Tolkien did not merely invent stories populated by fictional peoples, he created languages, writing systems, linguistic histories, and philological traditions that formed the very foundations of his legendarium. As Tolkien famously observed, his stories were often conceived to provide a world for the languages rather than the reverse.
