Happy
New Year
everyone!
The 3rd of January
is the first significant date
for my fantasy literature
scholarly calendar,
because it’s
Tolkien’s birthday.
He was born
in Bloemfontein,
now South Africa
(back then, Orange Free State),
on 3 January 1892, so this year marks
the 134th anniversary of his birth.
For many years now, myself
and many Tolkien students, scholars and fans across the world,
take part in a small ritual, established by the Tolkien Society:
at 9pm local time, we raise a glass
and toast Tolkien’s birthday:
“The Professor!”.
