If you’ve known me for any amount of time, on or off Facebook,
you know that my favorite author is John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.
Perhaps you didn’t realize how far back my affection
for The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion,
and countless other products of Tolkien’s imagination goes.
Back in the summer of 1968 I was a bright 11 year old who loved to read. My parents were teachers, and during summer breaks they would give me a subscription to one of several weekly newsletters aimed at elementary aged children. In 1968 my subscription was to SummerTime, a summer publication of Scholastic Books.
The July 29, 1968 issue of SummerTime had a cover story about some very popular books written by a professor at Oxford University with an unusual name. I had never heard of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, hobbits in general, or of anything else to do with Middle-earth. That two page little story describing the books and the world they were set in left me agog and eager to read them.
Unfortunately the local library didn’t have anything by Tolkien, and bookstores were only to be found in Atlanta (two hours away) or Chattanooga (closer, but still quite a journey.) So it was not until the spring of 1969, when I was 12, when I happened upon a copy of The Hobbit in my elementary school library. I checked it out and was hooked from the first line «In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. . .» Later that summer of 1969 I got my first paperback copies of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and I have been a steadfast lover of Middle-earth ever since.
Over the years I have remembered that little summer newsletter with fondness and nostalgia for having introduced Middle-earth to me. My copy was discarded in some move or other, and my efforts to find another copy were hampered by not fully remembering the title of the newsletter. But last Sunday afternoon while perusing eBay I ran across a copy! I ordered it and it arrived yesterday. Now I have the little newsletter that altered my life forever and for the better, and I can treasure it anew!
