An important division
within the New York Central system
was the Marine Department at New York.
In 1921, for example, it employed 1,500 men
and boasted 308 pieces of “floating stock”
(as opposed to rolling stock)
to handle the enormous traffic
to, from, and within the Metropolitan region.
