The last steam-hauled passenger train to run in Britain
dates back to exactly 50 years to August 1968.
It was called the Fifteen Guinea Special,
a special tour running from Liverpool Lime Street
to Manchester Victoria, Carlisle and back to Liverpool.
Tickets cost the princely sum of 15 guineas
– worth around £250 today –
but it was an historic journey.
The following day, British Rail banned steam.
