They weren’t slightly enhanced versions of each other.
They were mostly quite different designs
from different consortia;
in effect, they were all prototypes.
It was the usual Whitehall plan
to keep multiple small builders in business
when there wasn’t really room
for more than a couple.
As a result, none survived.
