A finales de los años 70, Ignacio Carrión, por entonces corresponsal en Inglaterra de la revista Blanco y Negro,
leyó en The Times un anuncio donde buscaban interesados en viajar a la India a precio de ganga.
Se trataba de recorrer el país en un vagón enganchado a los trenes que conectaban las principales ciudades hindúes.
Con humor incisivo e inteligente y prosa clara y elegante, Carrión narró aquella aventura en un libro publicado en 1977,
que pasó prácticamente inadvertido al cerrarse prematuramente la colección en donde apareció.
En "India, vagón 14-24" se observa una capacidad especial para encontrar en los pequeños detalles
que suelen escaparse al viajero ocioso la compleja realidad de un territorio que, como dicen los folletos turísticos,
supone "un asalto a los sentidos". El relato se va convirtiendo poco a poco en una novela de acción trepidante,
que transcurre en un escenario, la India, donde la miseria se da la mano con la antigua opulencia de un pasado colonial.
El autor observa, analiza y conversa con personajes tan reales como la madre Teresa de Calcuta
o la primera ministra Indira Gandhi, a la que entrevista en el capítulo que pone broche al volumen.

I bought this book, hoping for a bit of light reading, and it has been a surprise...
As the sample above shows, Mr Swarup writes crisp, fresh, clear English.
And there is a lot of information, packed in a way that gets it across the gulf to foreigners...
provided that they can read English, of course.

The Chariots

The three Chariots of Balabhadra, Subhadra and Jagannath are constructed each year with Sal wood,
customarily brought from the exprincely State of Dasapalla, by a specialist team of carpenters who have hereditary rights for this.

Lord Jagannath's Chariot is called Nandighosa. It is forty-five feet square at the wheel level.
It has sixteen wheels, each of seven feet diameter, and is decked with red and yellow coverings of cloth.

The Chariot of Lord Balabhadra, called the Taladhwaja, has fourteen wheels, each of seven feet diameter,
and is covered with red and blue cloth. Its height is forty-four feet.

The Chariot of Lord Subhadra, known as Darpadalan, is forty-three feet high with twelve wheels, each of seven feet diameter.
This Chariot is decked with coverings of red and black cloth.

Around each of the Chariots are nine Parsvadevatas, the guardian deities, and four horses.

Each Chariot has a Charioteer called Sarathi.

Matali, Darruka and Arjuna are the three Charioteers attached respectively to the three Chariots of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra.

See, Holy One - the Great Road which is the backbone of all Hind. For the most part it is shaded, as here, with four lines of trees; the middle road - all hard - takes the quick traffic. In the days before rail-carriages the Sahibs travelled up and down here in hundreds. Now there are only country-carts and such like. Left and right is the rougher road for the heavy carts - grain and cotton and timber, fodder, lime and hides. A man goes in safety here for at every few koss is a police-station. The police are thieves and extortioners (I myself would patrol it with cavalry - young recruits under a strong captain), but at least they do not suffer any rivals. All castes and kinds of men move here.

Look! Brahmins and chumars, bankers and tinkers, barbers and bunnias, pilgrims and potters - all the world going and coming. It is to me as a river from which I am withdrawn like a log after a flood.'

And truly the Grand Trunk Road is a wonderful spectacle. It runs straight, bearing without crowding India's traffic for fifteen hundred miles - such a river of life as nowhere else exists in the world.

Q. What is Project Unigauge?

Historically, India has had many different railway gauges in different sections, and some sections have changed gauges (sometimes several times back and forth) depending on perceived economic and operational requirements. However, maintaining multiple gauges leads to inefficiencies at transshipment points, etc., so in recent years there's been a push to convert all main routes and regional networks on IR to a single gauge, viz., broad gauge. This has been labelled 'Project Unigauge'.

Históricamente, la India ha tenido muchos anchos de vía en diferentes secciones, y algunas han cambiado de ancho (en ciertos casos más de una vez) dependiendo de lo que se pensaba en cada momento sobre las necesidades económicas y operativas. Empero, mantener varios anchos implica ineficiencia en los puntos de transbordo, etc., de forma que en los últimos años hay un impulso para convertir todas las líneas mayores y las redes regionales de IR a una sola medida, que ha resultado ser la vía ancha. Este trabajo es conocido como "Project Unigauge".
