I was born

in the Republic of Surinam

locally called Sranang

where the formal language

is actually Dutch.

Apart from all the languages

that came with foreign workers after the slavery time

we also have a few native languages.

– There is Morons and Saramakaans which is spoken by slaves that escaped into the jungle and could not be recaptured. These are very close still to their African origins.

– We have a number of languages that are spoken by the different native South American tribes who already lived in the area.

– And we have Sranang tongo. Literal translation: tongue of Surinam. This is the secondary language spoken most commonly among the people.

Especially outside the coastal/city region, Sranang tongo is the «universal» language.

Most of the local tribes and Moron and Saramakan people do not speak Dutch.
