JOHN MUIR (1838-1914)

Another great Scottish American.
Born in 1838 in Dunbar, Scotland.
Immigrated to the United States
with his family at age 11.
They settled in Portage, Wisconsin…
not far from the Boyd family farm.
He is considered the ‘father’
of America’s National Parks.

Botanist,
geographer and
philosopher,
he pioneered
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
(where I worked summers as a boy),
SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, and
JOHN MUIR WOODS,
and proved that most of
the country’s deep valleys
were formed by glaciers.
